When munitions release their energy at an unwanted moment they become a threat to friendly forces and to the general public. Mishaps involving munitions have happened and will happen, this is a statistical fact.

The development of Insensitive Munitions (IM) has been progressing for over three decades. Every since the highly publicised US Navy aircraft carrier accidents in the 1960s to 1980s, there has been a growing recognition of the value of IM.

Since its founding over 15 years ago, the NATO Insensitive Munitions Information Center (NIMIC) has been dedicated to the acquisition, compilation and analysis of information pertaining to insensitive munitions (IM).
