Energetic Materials

Providing advice and expertise on energetic materials from synthesis, formulation and characterisation

MSIAC expertise in energetic materials includes the synthesis of conventional and novel energetic materials, as well as the determination of their hazard and performance characteristics, and how these vary during the system life cycle. Consideration is also given to the use of novel and emerging processes for energetic material manufacture such as Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM) and additive manufacture, with a particular focus on how these processes may impact existing performance and safety targets.

Specific areas of interest include:

  • Monitoring the latest developments and research into energetic materials with regard to improved safety, performance, and environmental impact.
  • Supporting the munition safety community on the development of improved energetic material qualification processes, including the impact of novel manufacturing processes.
  • Understanding and assessing small scale testing methods for the characterization of EM including hazard, thermal / chemical stability and performance.
  • Understanding the ageing of EM with respect to service life and munition service environments.
