Samarium, europium, thulium and ytterbium merit consideration as high dense flare fuels. The metals exhibit a luminous combustion plume in reaction with both oxygen based and halocarbon oxidizers. Pyrolants have been prepared and investigated. From the combustion spectra the transient species have been identified. The combustion temperatures have been calculated and determined with ICT BaM code from NIR spectra. The considered metals burn to give coloured flames and as coarse material deliver nice coloured (green (Tm, Yb) and pink (Eu, Sm)) sparks.
