O-079 Recommendations For Shape Charged Jet, Munitions Test Procedure - Part 2: Gun Propellants

March 2003
Frédéric Peugeot (Warhead Technology)

The response of explosives and gun propellant beds to direct impact by shaped charge jets has been intensively studied over the past fifteen years by Germany, France, UK and US.

The purpose of this second paper of a series of two is to investigate and provide comments on studies over the past fifteen years on gun propellants to provide extra background for STANAG 4526 Shaped Charge Jet, Munitions Test Procedure, the first edition of which is in the ratification process. Shortcomings are highlighted and recommendations for the test configuration and the best gun propellant characteristics to pass the shaped charge test are proposed.
