L-242 A Shock Initiation Model for Fragment Impact of Energetic Materials

September 2017
Vincent Pouliquen
This report provides information about an analytical model of shock to detonation transition by fragment impact. It focuses on gathering several relevant models to describe as precisely as possible the projectile produced by the donor, the flight of that fragment and finally its impact on a covered explosive.
A comparison of Composition B and IMX-104 is proposed and a standard chart was created to offer an easy to use tool in order to determine safe distances in storage.
The model presented in this study is close to the “one on one warhead” model implemented in MSIAC/CEG TEMPER software. It could be quite easily implemented in the next generation predictive software.
