L-305 MSIAC 2024 Technical Meeting on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of Munitions

March 2025
Jakob Breiner, Christelle Collet, Kevin M. Jaansalu

The MSIAC NDT Technical Meeting took place on 13 May 2024, in Oslo, Norway, immediately prior to the Energetic Materials Technology Working Group (EMTWG). There were 40 delegates from 13 nations and 23 organisations. Across the three sessions of Best Practices for Radiography, Limitations and Capability Gaps, and Standardization of Acceptance Criteria, there were four common themes that were the NDT solution depends on the item that is being examined and the specific defect concerned, the purpose of the inspection and why it is being conducted, data accessibility and continuity, and the effects of the radiation on the item / energetic materials. Behind all of these points are the people who carry out the inspections and analysis who require extensive training and knowledge. Further work has been identified for the community, supported by MSIAC, with a future meeting focused on indirect fire munitions. Suggested topics are designs of a representative quality indicator for critical defects, defect characterization, challenges for AI / ML implementation, standards for data, sharing of appropriate information, and life cycle inspection requirements.
