O-150 Ammunition Accident at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base, Zygi, Cyprus - 11 July 2011

On the 11th of July 2011 at 5:50 in the morning a huge explosion tore through the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base on the island of Cyprus. The immediate consequences were the loss of 13 personnel with 62 injured. The dead included:  the commander of the Navy, the commander of the Evangelos Florakis base, along with four other Cyprus Navy personnel and six civilian firefighters who had been tackling the blaze that led to the explosion. The resulting blast destroyed a nearby power plant and damaged buildings including at the nearby villages of Mari (at 1.7km) and Zygi (at 4.5 km). Loss of the Vassilikou power station, which provided some 50% of the power capacity for the Republic of Cyprus, resulted in rolling blackouts lasting two to three hours
