O-021 A Methodology Software for Evaluating Potential Threat Hazards to Military Munitions (THAMES Version 2.0)

THAMES (Threat Hazard Assessment MEthodology Software) is a programme designed to evaluate the range of threats and hazards which include natural, induced, safety and those concerned with Insensitive Munition requirements that any munition (Naval, Army or Air) is likely to be exposed to during all possible life cycle environmental profiles

The methodology involves the use of a logical Threat Hazard Tree which divides the role of the munition into 3 major branches: logistic phase (manufacture to store and store to operational theatre), tactical phase (deployment and use) and the disposal phase. The logic identifies qualitatively the potential threats/hazards from perceived normal and abnormal environments including accident and combat scenarios. It highlights the stimulus level and indicates where the characteristics of duration or likelihood of occurrence should be determined from other sources. Using a Default Threat Hazard Logic Tree, called DEFAULT, SCE as a basis and by justifying the range of threats in the logic process, THAMES provides the user with the following information and capabilities:

  • Details of specific munition design safety requirement documents and explanations on all hazard environments.
  • Identification of associated tests, test procedures, test configurations and test severities to evaluate the above threats and hazards.
  • The IM requirement goals or safety acceptance criteria along with the provision of instructional notes necessary to analyze the specific hazards and threats.
  • The means within the software to modify the logic tree or list of threats, or add extra threats to the system to reflect the demands of the user when conducting a threat hazard assessment.
